YRAC Attends Rouge: Varley Gala

14 November 2018

Recently York Region Arts Council attended the Rouge: Varley Gala. The event was an excellent opportunity to support a local art institution through a fantastic silent auction and an exciting round of live bidding, all while mingling with the local community of art-lovers and supporters.

The Varley Art Gallery has been inspiring visitors for 21 years. Numerous elementary and high school students have come to experience art and education through the programs run by the Varley Art Gallery’s education department. This coming school year, through the support of the Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham, the William J. Withrow School Visits Bursary program will enable more students to visit the Varley Art Gallery by subsidizing the cost of bus transportation. These students will receive guided gallery tours and hands on learning through the programs led by the Varley Art Gallery’s experienced team of educators. The William J. Withrow School Visits Bursary was announced by board member Howard Back, to be awarded annually to the amount of $2500. William J. Withrow was a founding board member of the Varley Art Gallery.

Gallery Director, Niamh O’Laoghaire announced that the Gallery had been shortlisted for several OAAG Awards including:

Innovation in a Collections-Based Exhibition for Inscapes

Exhibition of the Year Budget Under $20,000 for Mother Tongue

Exhibition Installation & Design Award for Xiaojing Yan: Out from among the tranquil woods

All three shows were curated in-house by Varley Curator Anik Glaude.

Over $100,000 was raised at this event, and the proceeds raised from the Rouge: Varley Gala benefit theVarley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham, to support the vision of the Varley Art Gallery of Markham in offering outstanding exhibitions, public events, workshops, art camps and curriculum-based educational learning. While it serves as a fundraiser, this event also promotes the love of art and culture in our community with the Varley Art Gallery at its core as a vital cultural hub in York Region.

On view at the Varley Art Gallery until January 6, 2019 is Witness: Canadian Art of the First World War, a travelling exhibition developed by the Canadian War Museum. The Varley Art Gallery is pleased to offer free admission through the support of IBM.
