Cabinet Shuffle introduces new Minister of Heritage
On July 18, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced changes to the Liberal team in a cabinet shuffle. The new cabinet has 17 men and 17 women with several new additions to the team one of which being the new Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, Pablo Rodriguez. Canada's powerhouse arts and culture sector will be receiving new support from Ottawa, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly announced June 26. Over the next five years, $125 million will be spent on domestic programs, expanding the eligible sectors that can receive money and helping artists export their work internationally. The investment recognizes the growing economic and cultural impact of Canada's arts and creative industries, which now represent 2.8 per cent of the country's GDP.

How the new Creative Export Strategy affects the visual arts
Following former Heritage Minister Melanie Joly’s announcement of Creative Export Strategy in June the visual arts community has been waiting to see how this will effect them after there was no specific mention about Visual Arts in the announcement. A follow up with Canadian Heritage media relations clarified how the $125 million will be allocated and what this means for Canadian contemporary art. The $125 million will be spread out over five years with $25 million being disbursed each year. The new program promises to provide more options for international circulation beyond the existing Arts Abroad program of the Canada Council. Other benefits include access to knowledge and resources through cultural officers in Canadian embassies around the world and increased support for costs associated with travelling to International Art Fairs. We will stay tuned to see how the recent cabinet shuffle impacts this Strategy. Read the full article on Canadian Art.
