The York Region Arts Council (YRAC) is looking for a highly motivated Marketing & Communications Manager to join its team in Newmarket. In this role, you will report to the Executive Director and oversee some part-time and occasion staff positions. Core responsibilities include working with YRAC stakeholders, members and customers, co-ordinating and managing B2C and B2B marketing plans and implementing communications activities. Your contribution will be in the creation, elevation and execution of our marketing strategies, materials, and programs supporting our branding goals. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the development of the organization’s brand, which is a priority of YRAC’s 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. You will be a champion for building awareness, increasing engagement and ultimately have a hand in developing York Region as a vibrant place and destination!

Marketing & Communications Manager – Maternity Leave, 1 Year Contract

Salary: Commensurate with experience

You will work with the YRAC team on the following:

  • Collaborate with company leadership and key partners to develop strategic marketing plans that meet the organization’s business and marketing objectives,
  • Reporting and executing against the strategic plan and annual marketing and business plans
  • Managing the organization’s brand assets,
  • Managing approved marketing budget(s),
  • Developing partnerships with relevant organizations, companies and associations,
  • Planning and managing outreach, trade show booths and speaking engagements at targeted events,
  • Managing social media, web and print content  
  • Developing key performance indicators and methods for tracking analytics and impact,

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Marketing and Communications (35%)
    • Play a lead role in brand development of key YRAC initiatives and implement new/updated brand identity and messaging
    • Educate partners and stakeholders on updates to brand(s), marketing priorities, campaigns and stakeholder marketing tools
    • Responsible for the development and implementation of the annual marketing strategy, marketing budget(s), as well as marketing campaigns, communications plans/calendars, tactics and key messages to ensure alignment between strategic plan and marketing objectives
    • Set marketing KPI’s, track metrics and report on this information as required
    • Write and publish copy for digital and print assets, ensuring alignment with company-wide objectives, branding and USPs
    • Oversee outreach programs and activities
    • Lead the concept, development and implementation of the annual consumer Summer Guide
    • Select and manage relationships with marketing-related vendors, including but not limited to printers, mail houses, designers and editors
    • Develop and maintain key media relationships
    • Work with the YRAC team to identify key sponsorship opportunities of various YRAC initiates; develop sponsor brand activation ideas and oversee their management
    • Support the Executive Director with customer relationship management strategies and database management
    • Support market research needs of members


  1. Sales Support (30%)
    • Participate in the development and maintenance of the membership program
    • Lead the advertising sales of the YorkScene summer guide
    • Work closely with the Executive Director and Outreach & Program Coordinator in the development of sales, sponsorship and fundraising materials in relation to all YRAC initiatives
    • Identify potential new revenue/sales opportunities


  1. Special Events (20%)
    • Oversee Outreach & Program Coordinator’s management of outreach team(s) at member and community festivals and events
    • Collaborate on the development and production of elements of festival member events where needed
    • Manage and participate in all marketing elements required for successful project launches, programming initiatives, outreach events and incentive plans
    • Work closely with events staff and volunteers to ensure flawless execution of projects
    • Participate in the development of any YRAC events as required


  1. Team Leadership (10%)
    • Responsible for up to three direct reports (inclusive of permanent staff, contractors and summer students)
    • Play a lead role in developing and managing volunteer programs and positions related to marketing, communications and outreach activities


  1. Grant Writing (5%)
    • Write between one and four grants/funding proposals per year to support organizational capacity and marketing efforts


Your Experience and Background

  • Have a successful track record developing, leading and implementing marketing and communications plans and the innovative attitude to apply your talent
  • Demonstrated brand management experience
  • Thrive in an organization that constantly evolves and adapts
  • Embrace collaborative sharing of knowledge within a teamwork environment
  • Are driven to achieving results and continuously striving to deliver the highest performance through creative thinking
  • Completed a post-secondary degree in marketing & communications, business or relevant field
  • Have minimum 5 to 10 years of marketing experience, preferably in non-profit, arts and culture or tourism sector
  • Experience managing business websites
  • Have experience managing business accounts on social media channels including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram
  • Experience with web and social media analytics as well as tracking other KPIs
  • Possess strong computer skills including MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT) and Adobe (Photoshop, Illustrator), email marketing software (Constant Contact) and competency of Word Press is an asset
  • Have a keen eye for design
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Solution-oriented with a diplomatic approach to problem solving
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Experience working with initiatives that involve both the public and private sector
  • Familiarity working with members/customers is an asset
